Tax planning vs tax preparation: what is the difference?

Tax preparation is recording last year and filing the return. Tax planning is deciding how to lower tax before the year ends and keeping that work going all year. Most people pay for preparation. Doughy starts with planning so filing becomes the last step, not the whole job.

What is tax preparation?

Tax preparation is assembling last year's income, deductions, and credits into a complete return and sending it to the IRS and your state. A preparer makes sure forms are correct and signed.

That work matters. It is also backward looking. By the time your preparer starts, most choices that shaped your tax bill are already locked in.

What is tax planning?

Tax planning is choosing how you earn, spend, invest, and structure your business so you legally owe less over time. It includes estimating tax during the year, adjusting withholdings or estimated payments, and acting before deadlines pass.

Planning uses hundreds of tax strategies, deductions, and credits as a checklist against your facts, not just against last year's forms.

Which one am I paying for today?

If your accountant mainly asks for last year's documents each spring and sends a finished return, you are paying for preparation.

If someone meets with you during the year, models scenarios, and tells you what to change before December 31, you are paying for planning. Many firms sell preparation only, even when the engagement letter uses the word "advisory."

How is Doughy different?

Doughy is savings first, filing after. A Tax Savings Review finds missed strategies first. You decide what to implement. Implementation is custom quoted after the review. Ongoing plans keep planning active so filing is not the only touchpoint.

Who needs tax planning most?

Business owners, high W-2 earners, people with equity compensation, rentals, or investments outside retirement accounts usually benefit from planning.

If your income is steady and simple, preparation alone may be enough. Planning adds the most value when a small change in timing or structure changes your tax bill by thousands.

Common questions

Can one firm do both planning and preparation?

Yes. Many licensed tax advisors do both. The question is whether you are buying both or only the filing work.

Does Doughy replace my current accountant?

Only if you want that. Some clients keep a local preparer and use Doughy for planning and reviews. Others move books and filing to Doughy after they see the savings plan.

When should planning happen?

All year, with extra focus before major purchases, hiring, equity events, and the last quarter of the tax year.

Is tax planning only for businesses?

No. W-2 earners with stock compensation, side income, rental properties, or large deductions benefit from planning too.

Where do I see Doughy review prices?

All review and plan prices are on the pricing page. No sales call required.
